This project included 1.4 miles total reconstruction, including
a 48-foot concrete urban section, full storm sewer system, and stabilizing
a steep lake bank. It also incorporates a shared bikeway and sidewalk
integrated with existing traffic patterns along Lake Menomin on
the north side of Crescent Street. The bicycle and pedestrian portion
was designed in accordance with the bike system adopted by the City
as part of its Comprehensive Plan.
The project, which incorporates the use of red brick pavers, was
integrated with the renovation of the historic downtown area and
the 2nd Street Historic Mall. Design considerations included safety,
ease of travel, accessibility both for pedestrian users and automobile
users, aesthetic character of the corridor, and compatibility with
existing and proposed improvements. Extensive landscape planting
was incorporated into the project to help stabilize the lake bank,
replace existing plant material lost during construction, and frame
views of Lake Menomin from Crescent Street.
The project, which was DOT funded, required close coordination
between DOT officials, City of Menomonie officials, University of
Wisconsin officials and downtown business people.
